WRITER SEMINARS: How has studying published authors changed/improved your writing?

Are you glad you did your writer? Who different would you consider? Why?

I actually loved doing William Ernest Henley because his writing style is so different. By merging both pessimism and optimism, he created a voice that I have never seen before. William’s outlook on life has shaped mine as well, and I am glad that I did him as my writer. Another writer that I was thinking about when I first had to choose was Elie Wiesel. I have only read Night, and I can say that his writing feels so pure. There is no complexity at all which gives it a universal nature so that anyone can read it. Even his innocent ideas as a child are shown so accurately that it builds a connection with a variety of audiences- which is his ultimate purpose.

Which genres have interested you the most?

I like both fiction and non-fiction because they can both be impactful in their own ways and allow readers to build a strong connection. A more specific genre that I am interested in would be tragedies.

What did you learn from the writers?  Inspirations?

I have learnt to experiment with many genres, write about personal experiences, and to not hesitate when writing because of fear that others may not like it. The last point has hit me the most as many early writers, such as myself, limit our writing for there is fear that our audience will not like it. This is important to consider for professional pieces like essays, but still we should not be controlled by who we write for.

Do you intend to read more of  a writer? Which?

I am not looking to read more of William Ernest Henley’s poems just because I am busy reading other novels. If I do, however, have time to spare, then I will breeze through one of his pieces.

BLOGGER: Discuss 3-4 student writers in the class that you have commented on and/or are a fan of their writing. Please link to their blog post/page and explain what you like about their writing/work.

Paxton

  • Her writing is clear and short which makes it even more impactful. All her pieces of poetry have such depth but do not feel lengthy.  The ideas that Paxton uses in her writings have lots of meaning in our contemporary world and can easily be related too.
  • She can easily capture the reader’s attention through the way her words are structured and the effect that they have. I have noticed that Paxton has only grown in her strength as a writer, and I encourage her to continue.

Tim

  • I do not have much to comment about his blog other than the fact that all his writing pieces are entertaining and fun to read. If I am ever having a terrible day, Tim’s blog has something in it that always keeps me interested- especially his funny posts.

Faith

  • Faith’s writing is absolutely amazing, and her work has inspired me ever since I joined Creative Writing. I like the way her poems are structured and how she adopts different techniques that work for her from a variety of poets.
