White Roses: Poem for May

Red, the colour of deep passion and affection;

It is mistaken for love whereas its only an obsession.

Lust dances off the curves of this red rose;

The beauty of only perfection will show.

Two hearts, concealed with desire.

Thorns of jealousy prick two lovers.

Eyes reflect a glimmering glow of fake admiration.

Love for only pleasure, not respect.

Love for only satisfaction, not purity.

Why love when it is only fake and unreal?

White, the colour of innocence and divine beauty.

Elegance in every step taken,

joy and happiness dancing across one’s eyes,

the silhouette of a gentle and caring being.

Moonlight crawls through the crevices of her hair.

And though distance may draw two apart,

they will each remain in the other’s heart.

True love which is so close yet so far away.

Every Breath,

Every moment,

Every Blink.

Love from

a white

rose is

not as

far as

one

thinks

This poem highlights the duality of love and how easy of a shift it can be. It highlights appearance as opposed to reality and how authenticity is not too distant. If humans are able to diminish such bad qualities, which we inherit, and overlook the superficiality of love, one may find the purity that lives within its recesses. Lust, greed, and appearance inhibit humans from reaching that point of divinity which is present in love. Often, looks are not only deceiving but also can be manipulative as one may only desire love for this facade. We pride ourselves as being humans yet are unable to realize how humanity can be below animalism at times. There is a sense of innocence and unawareness in animals which allows them to have affection for another in a way where greed or lust does not cloud their minds.

I first determined some qualities present in both types of love so that we are able to recognize the contrast. Such can be seen in the line, ¨Thorns of jealousy prick two lovers¨ displays how love based off appearance only breeds jealousy off each other or possibly even others. It,also, exemplifies how roses have such beauty but have hidden secrets, thorns, that lie from within. Love that is superficial does not beget true love. My definition of the other side to love includes such purity and innocence that it may seem unattainable to any human. This is because our flesh is tainted with inhumanity, and we ironically call ourselves humans. In my closing lines I mention how, ¨love from a white rose is not as far as one thinks¨ and it is true. Some believe this purity is impossible to achieve; however, I feel that impossibility lies in those who do not contain an underlying passion. One must adopt animalistic traits as this is where pure innocence lies- in the uncertainty of life.

The structure of my poem, if looked upon carefully, outlines an image of a rose. My use of semicolons over colons show how love should not contain any aspects of logic but rather be instinctual.
